Regional Council of the Atlantic Salmon Federation

News and Issues Islander Becomes Director, ASF Regional Programs

Tuesday, May 25, 2004

St. Andrews – Bill Taylor, President of the Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) is pleased to announce that Todd Dupuis of Charlottetown, PEI, has been appointed to the position of Director of Regional Programs. In this position, Mr. Dupuis, who has been ASF’s Regional Director for Prince Edward Island for 12 years, will work closely with ASF’s Regional Councils throughout the range of the Atlantic salmon to help them address conservation issues.

Mr. Taylor states, “While there are many common problems facing salmon throughout their fresh and ocean water ranges in North America, (low marine survival, dams, fisheries for other species) each region also faces unique problems (acid rain, land usage, aquaculture practices, poaching). Todd’s work experience in the three Maritime provinces gives him a good understanding of the issues in those provinces and will help him as he works with the regions to address issues.”

Mr. Dupuis is a respected biologist and conservationist who has in-depth knowledge of wild Atlantic salmon and conservation and restoration programs. He graduated from the University of Prince Edward Island with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and has worked in the field of river ecology/restoration for 16 years. In his time with ASF, Todd has been a strong advocate of land use reform and has organized community groups to manage and protect their watersheds on Prince Edward Island.

Mr. Dupuis is a frequent lecturer on environmental issues and a sessional lecturer for the University of Prince Edward Island’s biology department. He has written and co-authored publications on stream enhancement, satellite rearing, river stewardship, and the movements of salmon that migrate from freshwater to the ocean and back.

He is a member of UPEI’s Watershed Research Group and the Federal Government’s Canadian Recreational Fisheries Awards Committee. He is past Chair of the PEI Wildlife Conservation Fund Advisory Committee, a past member of the Canadian Wildlife Federation Board of Directors, and past Commodore of the Charlottetown Yacht Club.

The Atlantic Salmon Federation is an international, non-profit organization that promotes the conservation and wise management of the wild Atlantic salmon and its environment. ASF has a network of seven regional councils (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Maine and New England) which have a membership of more than 150 river associations and 40,000 volunteers. The regional councils cover the freshwater range of the Atlantic salmon in Canada and the United States.
